What are flavonoids?
Flavonoids are a group of natural substances with variable phenolic structures found in fruits, vegetables, grains, bark, roots, stems, flowers, tea, wine, and….. CANNABIS. They are “well known” for their beneficial effects on health due to their anti-oxidative, anti-inflammatory, anti-mutagenic, and anti-carcinogenic properties coupled with the capacity to modulate key cellular enzyme function. Most recently, flavonoids have been garnering headlines due a recent study that showed that regular consumption of flavonoid rich foods can materially reduce cognitive decline.
So, getting stoned will keep me sharp? (Knew it!)
Yes, definitely. There are an abundance of false or unproven medical claims about cannabis today this particular one is irrefutable. Well, maybe that’s bit of a stretch…. but it is absolutely true that cannabis flower (versus stalk or seeds) contains high concentrations of flavonoids including cannflavins which are flavones that are are relatively unique to the C. Sativa plant. Ultimately, more than 20 flavonoids have been identified in C. Sativa most of which are flavone (apigenin and luteolin) and flavonol (kaempferol and quercetin). These are the same flavonoid compounds found in celery, onion leaves, parsley, apples, blueberries, and an abundance of other fruits and vegetables often touted for their cognitive, cardiovascular, immunity boosting, anti-inflammatory, and free radical fighting benefits.
Phytocannabinoids: A Piece in the Wellness Puzzle
When DankeSuper started in the hemp / CBD space, we committed an exorbitant amount of time evaluating the best format to deliver CBD. Primarily, whether full spectrum CBD rich hemp extract, broad spectrum, or isolate delivered the most effective and efficient result. Early in the process, we determined that isolate was not our preferred format in that it exhibited an erratic dosage response and eliminated the benefits of the ‘entourage effect’ that results from the interaction of a broad range of phytochemical compounds found in the cannabis plant.
In considering ‘broad’ versus ‘full’ spectrum, one of main considerations was that we don’t fully understand the full relationship of the 120 cannabinoids, flavonoids, terpenes, and other non-phythocannabinoid chemicals in the C. Sativa plant. Often times, broad spectrum is marketed as whole plant goodness without the THC. It’s true THC has been completely removed from broad spectrum formulations, but net result is a selectively reconstituted version of the whole plant. Basically, the extract is ‘decomposed’ and then rebuilt based on reasonably uninformed human judgement. It is great for marketing targeted effects of various terpene combinations with or without non-psychoactive cannabinoids, but does not truly offer whole plant benefits. In short, broad spectrum may be missing out non-phytocannabinoid entourage effects found in the C. Sativa plant independent of THC.
DankeSuper Flavonoids Squared
We have a tendency to describe our gummies as ‘fruit squares’ (not SEO friendly). This proclivity is not a function of the edibles shape (square), but a reference to the compounding benefits of the ingredients. For our DSquared8 & Full Spectrum Fruit Therapy the primary ingredients are flavonoid rich fruit and full spectrum hemp extract (with or without Delta-8 THC). Strawberries have been found to be one of the highest concentrations in the health promoting, antioxidant fiseten. While blood orange is notoriously rich in anthocyanins which possess anti-diabetic, anticancer, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and anti-obesity effects, as well as prevention of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). Each flavor has it’s own unique benefit and is not designed simply for it’s amazing taste. As our products evolve, DankeSuper will work to educate our customers on the distinctive benefits of our non-GMO, organic, sustainably sourced ingredients. Whether it’s relaxing with Delta-8 THC or achieving a mindful calm with our full spectrum hemp, we hope you enjoy the added benefits of flavonoids squared.
